Neighbours tackle fire after lightning strikes tree By Georgia O’Connor-Harding QUICK THINKING from Rolleston residents saved a shed from catching fire after a lightning strike on Sunday. Andre Berkett and a neighbour John Atherton used garden hoses to put out a tree fire after it was struck by lightning between 12.30-1pm at Goulds Rd across from Clearview Primary School. Mr Berkett said within 10sec of the lightning strike, the flames were as high as the treeline and heading fast towards a neighbouring property’s shed containing jet skis and a car. New Leeston pub opened By Gabrielle Stuart AFTER SIX long years without a pub, the Leeston community turned out to open the new Crate and Barrel last week – and

the doors have barely stopped swinging since. Publican Craig Bradford said business had been “flat out” all weekend after the grand opening on Thursday.

IT’S BEEN a dry innings at Leeston but as we reveal on our front page today, the town’s pub has finally opened. Photographer Martin Hunter went along to the official opening on Thursday and he says the Crate & Barrel is one outstanding building. The quake put paid to the previous establishment, and Leeston has been effectively dry since; the rugby club being the main watering hole. So it was fitting that the official opening had plenty of fanfare and of course two Canterbury rugby greats to cut the ribbon. The publicans Craig and Bridget Bradford will also certainly make their mark as mine hosts. Craig says it will be more than a pub, he expects it to act as a community centre for the town. Residents meet over Lincoln pet crematorium noise issues

But he said Gribbles had received positive feedback from the district council, saying all but two neighbours had been complimentary of the work

Residents first began to notice the noise of the burners at Christmas last year, which they say are a lot louder than before the site was redeveloped. At the meeting, a presentation was made by representatives from ComMec and Marshall Day Acoustics over noise mitigation work to the furnaces. A report said Fond Farewells engaged with acoustical consultants Marshall Day Acoustics, which provided a report to mitigate noise. New mufflers and attenuators were designed by combustion engineers ComMec to reduce noise. Noise assessments of the crematorium were completed last month by the district council. A letter to residents said a significant decrease in the noise was emitted and sound levels were less than the district plan’s daytime noise limits of 55dB. •ECan letter, page 12

In Brief LUCKY ESCAPE A young man was lucky to walk away from a serious crash on Christchurch Akaroa Rd, near Lake Ellesmere, on Sunday. Firefighters arrived at about 4.30pm to find the car in the ditch and the driver with a “very minor” injury, which did not require a trip to hospital, said Dave Irving, Little River chief fire officer. The car left the road, hit a rock and flipped into the ditch. It was right before “sunset point corner”, Mr Irving said. ART WEEK OPENING Darfield Art Week starts with an opening gala on October 6. The gala will be held at 7pm at Darfield Recreation Centre. Darfield Art Week, run by the Malvern Community Arts Council, will have three exhibitions. Road signs protect keas By Georgia O’Connor-Harding PERMANENT KEA warning signs have been installed around Arthur’s Pass village in a bid to protect the endangered species. Two warning signs urging drivers to look out for keas were installed by the New Zealand Transport Agency. It comes after the Department of Conservation recorded six kea deaths in the area as a result of being struck by vehicles since the beginning of the year. Four of the deaths occurred at Deaths Corner, one in the Arthur’s Pass village and the other near the Bealey Hotel. Two kea died last month after they were electrocuted by a powerpole at Temple Basin Ski Area. DOC is working with Orion to reduce further deaths. A DOC spokeswoman said its records rely on people informing the organisation, or handing in dead birds, so it may not reflect all kea deaths on the road. At the same time, a group of about 20 birds, half of them juveniles, were seen in the area. The two signs, costing about $1600, were installed on either side of the township – one near Jack’s Hut and the other near Candys Bend. Kea are nationally endangered with a population estimated to be between 3000-5000.

Rolleston firefighters some of the busiest By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ROLLESTON Volunteer Fire Brigade is the second busiest volunteer station in the country. The latest statistics show from January 1 to December 31 last year, the brigade was dispatched to 500 call-outs. Attending medical calls, backing up other fire stations and the growth of the Rolleston township contributed to the increased call-outs. The only other station busier than Rolleston was the Silverdale Volunteer Fire Brigade, Auckland, which attended 551 call-outs last year. The statistics were released by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission through the FYI website, which enables the public to make Official Information Act and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act requests online. Further figures released to Selwyn Times showed a total of 1681 fire calls were attended by the district’s 13 stations. Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade had the second highest number of call outs in the district with 275, followed by Kirwee on 160, Leeston 101, and Darfield 100. The Rolleston brigade covers Waimakariri, Lincoln and

The brigade’s rural tanker, ROLL4211, which is used for vegetation and structure fires, attended 83 call-outs, while the ROLL4226 appliance used for medical call-outs attended 20 incidents. ROLL4227 and AREA2001 attended one incident each last year. Mr Tier said Rolleston and Lincoln will get new trucks every three to four years due to the high number of calls it attends

Cheryl’s not crowing By Georgia O’ConnorHarding CHERYL Haglund is far from impressed after six roosters mysteriously appeared on her front lawn in the night. A band of silky cross roosters were dumped at her lifestyle block at Holmlea Farms based on Waterholes Rd, Rolleston overnight recently. Mrs Haglund is now calling for residents to take responsibility for their own animals rather than casting them off to other people. “Somebody has the damn bloody cheek to dump their six roosters on my property in the night . . . they didn’t even have the decency to say I have got these roosters, I don’t want them anymore, are you able to find a place for them,” she said. Mrs Haglund said she would have taken the roosters and found homes for them anyway. So far she has managed to catch three of the roosters. “People think I have got a lot of chooks, I am not going to notice half a doz-

en more. I know just about all my chooks personally,” Mrs Haglund said. Being on the pension, she said she is struggling to feed her own animals as it is. Mrs Haglund cares for a range of animals on her lifestyle block including a cow, donkey, sheep, goat and mini-horses. “I’ve sold chickens and young chooks and I have always said to anybody who has taken them from me if by chance it turns out to be

Your Local Views Time to celebrate the lives of those who have shaped us The mayor writes about appreciating the value of friends and family Selwyn is full of inspirational people. Last week I attended the funeral of Annie Gwendoline Hatton who had lived 102 great years. The occasion celebrated her life and her family including children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. Over 102 years there have been many world events that she had lived through but the stories shared at the service focused on the lasting legacy she leaves with her family and community. A legacy of love, care, compassion, and hope for life beyond this world. Last week my brother had a child. My nephew was born at 2.46am being 3.3kg. He is born to a family who love him dearly. He has a great grandmother, grandparents, and extended family who will help him grow and develop through the years. He is born into the same world

We all have stories about people in our family who have inspired us to choose the life we have, or to hold certain philosophies or make particular decisions. The people who support us are often those outside our family too. Spring is now here and is a time when the environment celebrates life, there are blossoms, daffodils, lambs and calves, and sprouts and leaves all beginning the next season of growth. It can also be a time when we celebrate our own lives and the lives of those who have shaped us. This spring I encourage you to think about the people of influence in your life.

Perhaps those who made a difference while you were at school, or maybe your neighbour who was always there for you? Perhaps there are one or two aunties and uncles who you loved to stay with when you were young? Maybe there are a couple of people who have been an encouragement and support for you recently? Who is that friend who has often had the right words to say to you? I encourage you to be grateful for the good people in your life, and to let them know you are grateful for their friendship and support. Maybe you need to call your great grandmother, or perhaps you could say a few words to a newborn.

Jamie Lawrence: Have you people seen the projections for Lincoln over the next 10 years? But sure if they open another supermarket that sold alcohol it wouldn’t be a problem right? What does it matter if someone wants to start another business? Rolleston or Hornby aren’t that far away if people want alcohol. As a previous student at Lincoln I can honestly say another alcohol store would not make a single difference, its easy enough for students to get alcohol if they want it. Another store won’t make that any easier, most kids parents or siblings buy them alcohol anyway. Residents write to the Selwyn Times about the construction of a new bridge at Liffey Stream Jens Christensen – Thank you for publishing my letter regarding the waste of money proposed to be spent on a third footbridge over the Liffey Stream south of Edward St. Firstly, may I say that the letter contained no link to my position of chair of the Rolleston Reserve Management Committee, this was unfortunately your doing.

The letter was written in my private capacity as a ratepayer concerned about what is obviously a waste of ratepayer money and with my knowledge of the area as the developer of the Ryelands subdivision. If it is the intention of the Lincoln Community Committee and district council to link the esplanades on the eastern bank of the Millpond then the full story hasn’t been told or costed as there will be a need to construct another bridge over the pond that lies to the south of the old club building, for this piece of water is privately owned and not part of the esplanade. The committee sees benefit in being able to walk the full length of the reserve but this can be done on all of the western side but not all of the eastern side. Surely the wildlife that frequent this pond have some rights to roost and nest without the public access and disturbance along both sides of the stream.

The committee comments that without this bridge, the public needs to take a considerable detour regardless of where the existing bridges are. That is misleading to me and if people are walking for the experience and good of their health, does an extra 200 to 400m really matter? I urge the district council and community committee to properly evaluate this project before spending any more money in considering the above, and provide the community of Selwyn with a proper cost benefit analysis of this project before going any further. By the way, don’t use the school as an excuse as it is scheduled to be back on its Boundary Rd/ North Belt site by the end of 2018. Ross Mitchell – I agree with Jens Christensen’s comments in that the proposed new bridge seems a huge extravagance. I would like to suggest that the funding for the proposed bridge be spent on maintaining the lovely asset that we already have in the Mill Stream pond. The weir that creates the pond would have long disappeared if it weren’t for the efforts on a local resident in maintaining the weir at his own expense. Full marks to that resident, albeit that the weir is still in a pretty parlous state. The rapid encroachment of the

Volunteers help students achieve outside school

Darfield High School principal James Morris writes about the role of parents and organisations in the school’s sporting, cultural and academic activities I would like to celebrate those staff, parents and others in the community who contribute their time, energy and skills to activities for students beyond the core subjects they normally take in school. These sporting, cultural and academic activities are an important part of the culture of our school and the learning that students do. In noting a few recent examples, I keep in mind that this is only a small part of the picture of contributions to the school. Rather, these are examples that illustrate the value of those who can go the extra mile. Last week hockey, basketball. rugby and netball teams competed in the national secondary schools tournament week in

various locations around the South Island. In order for the students to be part of this, we rely on the dedication throughout the season of the coaches, managers and parents (often the same person) to prepare, transport and manage the teams. Each year, the Malvern Lions club run two Fries Days at the school to raise funds for our young achievers reward trip. For each of these, a big team of Lions volunteers donate their time to run the production of the food. We appreciate Lions ongoing support of our school and the students. Year 12 students participated in an interview day where they were interviewed by employers in mock job interviews as part of their preparation for real interviews in the future. Many local businesses and individuals gave their time to

provide this valuable learning experience. Many of our students and other children are also involved in gymnastics at the school gym on Fridays. This was started three years ago by a parent when she saw a need in the community. It has grown to be a big part of many families weekly calendar, with more than 100 participants spread over four sessions, including some of our students involved as leaders. Year 8 classes are working together to develop a vegetable garden with the intention of making products to sell using the vegetables they grow. The teachers leading this project appreciate the support of several local companies which have supplied materials to get it off the ground.

West Melton woman takes to the wilderness WEST MELTON woman Meg Watson has proved that having a neurological condition is no barrier to achieving things she never dreamed possible. Ms Watson, 21, attended Horizons, an eight-day Outward Bound course adapted for people with a range of intellectual disabilities. Her group of students was challenged to test their boundaries through activities in the outdoors, including sailing, high ropes and climbing rock faces blindfolded. With a neurological condition that affects her focus and balance, accompanied by mood disorders, including depression

and anxiety, Ms Watson said going to Outward Bound really showed her she was capable of anything. “While it was challenging being away from family, I had time to think and I learned a lot about myself. I realised anything is possible. There were some really challenging activities, like climbing the rock face but I did it and loved it. We really are capable of doing things we don’t think are possible,” she said. Being around people 24/7 was also a highlight. “Being with people meant there was always someone to talk to. I loved having people around me,” she said.

Residents’ satisfaction with Selwyn District Council’s overall performance has increased for the fourth consecutive year. In the Council’s latest residents’ opinion survey, 70% of respondents rated the Council’s overall performance as good or very good – an increase of 5% from 2016. This continues a long-term trend which has seen the overall performance rating rise steadily from 58% in 2013. The survey also showed that 91% of residents think Selwyn is a great place to live – slightly down on last year’s 94% but up on 90% recorded in 2015.

Across 21 different Council services surveyed, 17 recorded satisfaction ratings of 50% or higher. Ten services recorded an increase in their rating from last year, while the same number saw a reduction and one remained unchanged. Among the highest rated services were rubbish collection (96% rated good or very good), recycling (95%), libraries (85%), parks and reserves (84%) and sewerage and wastewater (78%). Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says the continuing increase in the overall performance rating is a positive signal from the community. “This survey provides us with valuable feedback on how we’re doing each year,” he says. “It’s encouraging that residents generally see our overall performance improving over time, and that most people really enjoy living in Selwyn. “However the survey also points out areas where we need to continue improving services, particularly our rural roading network. It’s important that we listen to residents’ views – and these results will be taken into account as the Council works on priorities for our next 10-year plan.” The survey was carried out in June and July by independent research company Research First, and surveyed 411 people using telephone, cellphone and online surveys to provide a statistically representative sample of Selwyn’s population. Waste management services maintained high satisfaction ratings. Alongside rubbish collection (96%) and recycling (95%), organic collection was also rated highly at 89%. The Pines Resource Recovery Park was rated good or very good by 74% of residents overall – and 82% among those who had used the facility.

Community facilities continue to be well used and enjoyed by residents. Public halls have been used at least once in the past year by 81% of respondents, while 83% have visited a park or reserve and 69% have used the public library network. Satisfaction with libraries increased by 3% to 85%, while parks and reserves (84%) and public halls (72%) also recorded increases. Satisfaction with wastewater services increased by 4% to 78%, while water supplies increased slightly from 73% to 74%. Satisfaction with urban stormwater reduced by 3% to 51%, while the rating for water races dropped from 50% to 44%. Satisfaction ratings were higher among respondents who actually used the services with wastewater rating 87%, stormwater 66% and water races 51%. In land transport services, some services saw a decrease in their rating, including satisfaction with urban roads (rated good or very good by 50%), rural roads (32%) and making roads and footpaths safer (40%). There was also an increase in the number of people who said they felt a sense of community with people in their neighbourhood, up from 69% to 73%. Mayor Broughton says the Council is continuing to invest in maintaining and improving services. Current and planned work programmes include road maintenance, renewals and resurfacing, extending the district’s footpath network, new cycleways and intersection improvements. Water supply improvements and treatment upgrades are under way or planned at several locations across the district. The Council is also investing in new community centres at West Melton and Tai Tapu, earthquake strengthening community halls, and adding or upgrading facilities at other facilities. Project Wild Thing – reconnect your kids with nature Selwyn District Council is bringing the internationally acclaimed film documentary, ‘Project Wild Thing’, to Selwyn. The UK film has kickstarted a movement to encourage children to play outdoors and reconnect with the natural world. Project Wild Thing is supported by The Wild Network, a collaborative movement of over 1000 organisations and thousands of individuals committed to getting kids outdoors. By ‘rewilding’ childhood, Project Wild Thing aims to improve children’s health, happiness, and respect for the environment. At this free event, Selwyn parents will enjoy a screening of the documentary, while their children experience a variety of play activities at the Rubicon Valley Tourist Centre with the TimberNook outdoor education team. The event will also include a farm display, games, horse trek, bush walk, rock skimming, outdoor challenges and jet boating. The jet boating and horse back tours will be discounted and are at attendees’ cost. Jurassic future ahead for Rolleston’s teen scientist A ROLLESTON College student has been recognised for achieving 29 science badges as part of a scheme designed to promote students interest in science activities. Bailey Faas, 13, was awarded bronze, silver and gold star badges by the Science Award Trust for being the first person to complete 29 badges. The topics of each badge ranged from agriculture to zoology. Science Award Trust chairwoman Sue Jarvis said Bailey was the first student to achieve the high number of badges and the trust congratulates him on his amazing achievement. The science badge scheme is run by the Science Award Trust, a group of current and former teachers who give their time voluntarily to provide science resources to students, parents and teachers Bailey first started completing science badges when he was in year 7 at Rolleston School. “I saw a girl in assembly getting a badge for ‘large animals’. It sounded like fun and I wanted to try it,” he said. Zoology was Bailey’s first science badge and he completed another two while still in year 7. Last year, while in year 8,

Bailey worked tirelessly and completed 20 additional badges, bringing his total to 23 by the end of primary school. As one of the foundation learners at Rolleston College this year, Bailey had the opportunity to continue his science investigations. As part of the school’s science extension selected course “just a theory”, he completed the last six remaining science badges available. “I have always been interested in astronomy and palaeontology – the palaeontology badge was my favourite,” he said. Bailey said science has

expanded his knowledge on a number of things and he recommends the scheme for other people too. Looking ahead to the future, Bailey plans to take as many science-selected courses at his school as possible. SCHOOL DAYS should be shorter. Farming isn’t bad. These were the topics Ellesmere College students discussed in last week’s Selwyn Lions Speech Competition. Flynn Price won the year 7 category of the competition and Jennifer Barnett took second place in the year 8 section. Thirteen schools entered the competition which took place at the Prebbleton School hall. Administration support teacher Lindsay Cook said gaining first and second places was a great result for the students. In his speech, Flynn was all for a shorter school day because some students get on the bus at 7.45am and do not return home until 4.30pm. He said that is a long day and involves many kilometres of travel. For young people, he reasons that the early start is not condu-

cive to good learning and that it would be better for the school day to run from 10am to 2pm. Jennifer Barnett lives on a crop and sheep farm. She said many people are against farming and blame environmental problems, such as the issues with Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora, on farming when there are other contributing factors such as the effects of bird droppings.

LEESTON Consolidated School pupils have let their creative juices flow writing an original play. After a couple of sessions with the School For Young Writers the pupils spent five hours rehearsing their play which was aired on Plains FM recently. How World War 3 Happened Because of a Paper Clip tells the story of a girl called Gabby, the daughter of the prime minister who reveals top secret information during a speech competition. The speech, which was livestreamed, did not end well because the information would have been misinterpreted by the audience in Japan. Gabby and her friends have to stop the information from reaching Japan to prevent World War 3.

SPRINGSTON SCHOOL has been recognised for a clever video they created about saving eels. Two pupils from the school won the overall trophy for the Lincoln Envirotown’s Selwyn Environmental Video Awards on Friday. The award called the Kea Trophy 2017 was presented to the pupils by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall. Lincoln Envirotown Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Jarvis said it was a simple but effective video featuring an eel puppet made out of an old sock. She said the video clearly outlined what people can do to save the eels. There was stiff competition from the diverse groups and individuals that had put their filmmaking skills into showing their concerns and actions relat-

ing the environment. Dr Jarvis said all were winners on the night as everyone came away with a certificate and a bag of goodies kindly donated by Rolleston Square, Enviro-Mark Solutions, and The Warehouse Rolleston. New World Lincoln also donated food and refreshments for the competition. Mr Lyall presented certificate and prizes to the following videos: Independent adult - Martin Langlands for Soldiers of The Flow. High School age group – Aireen Bautista for Man and Nature. High tea raises $8000 for Hagar New Zealand A SUCCESSFUL high tea fundraiser has raised more than $8000 to support women and children rescued from trafficking and slavery. The Secret Garden tea party fundraiser was held recently to support Christian organisation Hagar New Zealand.

The sale of tickets and a silent auction helped raise the money for the organisation. It is the fourth year the tea party has run and was organised by the Lincoln Baptist Church. This year’s theme was based on the book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

News A&P show marks 155 years LIVESTOCK AND equestrian judges from across the globe will descend on Christchurch in mid-November as New Zealand’s largest A&P Show turns 155-years-old. More than 500 people volunteer at the Canterbury A&P Show every year and around 120 of those volunteers are judges, with some coming from as far as the United States this year. Canterbury A&P Association president Peter Gilbert said the calibre of judges is one of the reasons the Canterbury A&P Show is seen as New Zealand’s most prestigious A&P event. “Bringing these judges in from overseas is a huge drawcard for our competitors. Not only do they bring extensive international experience, it’s also extra confirmation for our competitors that their stock is the best of the best as they’re being judged by someone completely new,” he said. This year the Canterbury A&P Show will host a Royal A&P dairy cattle event, which has prompted the appointment of Mark Rueth from Wisconsin, US. Mr Rueth owns Rosedale Genetics, has sold embryos in 10 countries and has judged at top level shows and expos in the

US, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Switzerland and Mexico. He also currently serves on the World Dairy Cattle Show Committee. Mr Gilbert said it is not just the overseas judges that bring a wealth of knowledge to the event. “We also have judges coming from across New Zealand, many

of whom have decades of experience both here and overseas. A lot of these people have worked in the industry for a long time, forging their careers in genetics, owning their own studs or just being incredibly passionate about stock judging. Some have volunteered for many years at our show too. We can’t thank them enough for lending their

time and expertise.” With entries closing in a couple of weeks, Mr Gilbert urged exhibitors to get their entries in. “Not only is it a great opportunity to win prizes and awards, it’s also a chance to swap knowledge and ideas with other exhibitors and learn from judges too. “You can’t beat the chance to catch up with old friends and meet other like-minded people. Pastor to lead new school board By Emily O’Connell SOUTH WEST Baptist Church pastor Warren Read has been appointed board of trustees chairman for the new primary school which will open in Halswell. Pastor Read, Sarah Lowe (deputy chairwoman), Amanda Wall, Giarne Harrison and Rodney King make up the board for the school, which will be sited in Knights Stream Park. The school will open in January 2019. The school, which has not yet been given a name, will cater for up to 450 pupils from year 1-8. Mrs Lowe is a preparatory music director at The Cathedral Grammar School, Mrs Wall is a senior adviser at Regenerate Christchurch, Mrs Harrison is a mother of two children with a background in education, advocacy, community service and administration and Mr King is a guidance counsellor at Oxford Area School. Fifth title for invincible Lincoln By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN PROVED unbeatable for a third straight season when they claimed the Selwyn Netball Centre premier title with a 57-47 win over Broadfield on Saturday. It was Lincoln’s fifth straight title and continued an unbeaten run for the team which stretches back to start of the 2015 season. “We do have quite the run going on and we’d like it to continue,” said Lincoln player/coach Vanessa Robinson. Saturday’s final against Broadfield was no walk in the park with injuries requiring two players from the Lincoln B team to step into the squad for the biggest match of the season. Although the team is more than used to playing in the final, there were still plenty of early nerves. “It was a really tough battle. [Broadfield] came out firing and it took us about 15min to settle into

the game,” said Robinson. As the game progressed, Lincoln seized control. Robinson highlighted the play of centre Char Porima, and goal-shooter Hannah Wilson, who made 41 of her 46 shot attempts. “For a final that’s pretty outstanding,” said Robinson. The team are very keen to continue the unbeaten run in 2018 but, for now, they will enjoy celebrating another title. “We’re very good at celebrating. We hit Lincoln and then we hit my place. The boys were watching the rugby and the girls were partying,” said Robinson. Finals results: Premier one: Lincoln 57, Broadfield 47. Premier two: Burnham 53, Lincoln B 37. LINCOLN HIGH School achieved their best ever result at the national secondary school football tournament, finishing sixth in Taupo last week. The second day of the weeklong tournament was one to remember not just for Lincoln, but for central defender-comestriker Jacob Anderson. Starting the day, Lincoln needed a victory in their final pool game against Tauranga Boys’ College to qualify for the round of 16. Tied at two-all with just minutes remaining, Lincoln were awarded an indirect free kick which was slotted home by Anderson. The 18-year-old was then the hero again just hours later when he scored another 90th-minute winner, which saw his side defeat Otago Boys’ High School 2-1 in the round of 16. Anderson has played in the central defence for Lincoln most of the season but was at striker throughout the tournament, a move that ended up paying dividends. Lincoln were defeated by tournament runners-up Auckland’s Sacred Heart College in the quarter-final 0-4, before recording a 2-1 win over Wellington’s St Patrick’s College and a 0-2 loss to Saint Kentigern

Lincoln under-15s take silverware By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN HIGH School’s under-15 rugby team had a strong finish to the South Island secondary schools winter tournament in Greymouth last week. They came home with a piece of silverware, winning the division two title, defeating Dunstan High School from Alexandra

17-10 in the final. The 26-team strong tournament consisted of a pool play section, with the top eight, middle eight and bottom 10 teams then split into three divisions. Lincoln suffered two narrow defeats first up in their pool, going down to Dunedin’s John McGlashan College 12-14, and Wanaka’s Mt Aspiring College 7-8.

Their first win came in their final pool play game, comfortably accounting for Roncalli College 33-3 to qualify for division two. In the quarter-final, Lincoln brushed aside Rangiora High School 33-3, before defeating Ashburton College 17-7 in the semi-final. Prop Jordan Lill was named in the tournament team at the prize-giving.

Barnes plans to play mystery set in Lincoln By Bridget Rutherford JIMMY BARNES hasn’t decided what songs he will play at March’s Selwyn Sounds. He will choose on the day when he sees the crowd. “I get to a set and I have a look at the audience – what are they doing, are they having a good time? And I’ll pick the set accordingly,” he said. One thing’s for sure – he plans to “rock out” and give the crowd a good show. The legendary Aussie rocker will headline the day-long music festival at Lincoln Domain on March 3. It follows this year’s inaugural event, which saw Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex, Dragon and other Kiwi heavyweights play in front of about 10,000 people. Barnes, who now lives in the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, said he couldn’t be sure if he had visited Lincoln before. But he enjoyed playing in small towns. It took him back to where he started as lead singer in Cold Chisel, he said. “I’m looking forward to it, it’s a beautiful part of the country,” he said. “I like to support the area, especially after the earthquakes.” When his music career began in the 1970s, he never imagined some of the songs would still be crowd favourites today, he said. Khe Sanh, which was recorded in 1976, was an example, he said. “When you get up and play it, you can see young and old and they’re all

Parallels between sport and working in Corrections NEW CORRECTIONS recruit Charmaine Shaw is using her skills as the manager of the South Island Scorpions rugby league team in her new career as a frontline officer. She is working at Christchurch Women’s Prison after completing her 12-week Corrections officer development pathway course. She was presented with the minister’s excellence award acknowledging the leadership, passion and professionalism she displayed throughout her training. Mrs Shaw, of Halswell, says there are parallels between the skills she has honed through her involvement with the Scorpions and the approach she takes every day working in the prison. “You have to be dedicated and loyal to the task at hand,” she says. “Just like training for rugby league, you have to be committed whether it’s in the sunshine or in the pouring rain. You learn to take the not so good days with the really good days and recognise that’s just the way life rolls sometimes. You can’t get hung up on the negatives. “It’s like losing a game where you learn from what didn’t work well, accept the loss and maybe try a different strategy next time. “In the Scorpions, we want to encourage the young players to

be good young men who will grow up to be good husbands and fathers. You want them to be positive contributors to society and get them to take all the opportunities given to them. “We look for talent and skill on the field, but the players’ attitude is their most important attribute. In a split second a person’s attitude can take them to a good place or a bad place – I’m looking for the same thing with the women in prison I work with.” Mrs Shaw says her work in

education, with youth and with people with mental health issues has helped with her understanding of her new role. Her knowledge of Te Reo Maori will also be put to great use in the prison’s programmes. “I am proud to be Maori, the statistics for Maori in prisons are not very good and I want to be a positive Maori role model to the people I work with daily,” she said. “I feel very humbled to be in a role where I can influence others

and utilise my people skills to assist and guide others to want to be better people and change their lives so that they never return to prison.” The Corrections officer development pathway is a new training package for custodial officers that blends on-the-job and classroom-based learning for Corrections officers and offender employment instructors. Each learner’s development is led and managed by their home prison and experienced prison

staff have a key role in progressing learners along the pathway. “I absolutely loved college and the experiences we had,” said Mrs Shaw. “Our facilitators were engaging, supportive and passionate in giving us the foundation tools we needed to start in our new roles on the frontline. “The camaraderie of both my Christchurch-based colleagues and also my wider training cohort was a huge driving force behind my learning,” she says. “I am loving being at Christchurch Women’s Prison. It is a great place to start my career and there are plenty of opportunities to continue learning.” Christchurch Women’s Prison director Wayne McKnight says although Mrs Shaw is new to Corrections she is already making her mark. “The skills she already learnt leading to her career change to Corrections have put her in a good place for this role. Working in a prison can be extremely challenging but also rewarding.” “Much like sports management, it is all about people, mentoring and looking for that opportunity to influence change. You need to be patient, supportive and constantly watching for that opportunity.”

How to control leaf curl in peach trees By Sarah Frater LEAF CURL (Taphrina deformans) is a common fungal disease that effects peach, nectarine, peachcott, and peacherine trees. It causes the leaves (and some times the fruit) of the infected tree to become puckered, curled and much thicker than normal. If left untreated the problem will get worse year-after-year and reduce the tree’s ability to produce lots of fruit. Over winter the fungal spores take up residence in different parts of the tree, but mainly in the buds. When the cool wet weather of spring and summer arrives many leaf curl spores are produced and are then splashed or blown from tree to tree. Because this is also the time the trees are breaking bud and forming new leaves, the new growth is easily reinfected with leaf curl. Controlling leaf curl isn’t easy but good orchard hygiene habits, which should be repeated each year, will give you the best chance. First of all, plant your trees where they will get adequate air movement – this will help minimise fungal problems. In spring apply a light dressing of a quick acting fertiliser such as sulphate of ammonia to encourage new leaf growth. At the same time, I also recommend applying a seaweed fertiliser to help the plants’ immunity to leaf curl. If you do get leaf curl, during spring is when you will notice it in your trees. Once you notice the symptoms of leaf curl in your

leaves it is too late to control the disease in those leaves but there is lots you can to do try and stop the fungus from spreading. The first step is to remove and destroy as many infected leaves as practical. But don’t compost these as it will spread the infection. In autumn and early winter clean up around the base of any peach and nectarine trees and removing as many leaves as possible. Because these types of trees are susceptible to leaf curl, I suggest doing this regardless of whether they’ve shown any signs of disease. And, again remember –

don’t compost the leaves. Next, you should spray your deciduous trees (the trees that lose their leaves every year) with lime sulphur. The lime sulphur acts by burning off the over wintering fungi and pests, including mites. It’s very important you do this for gooseberry bushes because they are prone to catching mites which can eat out the flower buds, meaning your bush ends up with no fruit. Luckily, the lime sulphur will get rid of those mites. But I don’t recommend applying it to your apricot trees because they can be sensitive to

lime, so it’s best just to avoid it. Around now, in late winter/ spring (and don’t worry if you haven’t done any of the other steps yet – just start now), apply a copper-based fungicide to all your deciduous fruit trees – not just peach trees. A copper-based fungicide will help stop leaf curl on peach and nectarine trees but it will also treat fungal problems on other fruit trees – like black spot on apple trees. I also recommend mixing in the copper fungicide with a spreader/sticker, which you can get from your local garden centre. It works a bit like soap.

Combined with the fungicide, it will make the whole area you spray wet and then when it dries it sticks to the area so you get good coverage that sticks or stays on the tree for a long time. The copper fungicide (and spreader/sticker) should be applied while the leaf and flower buds are still closed – right before the buds burst. Spray thoroughly as you need to create a surface barrier. Then follow this up with another spray 10-14 days later – particularly if you’ve had lots of wet weather. This will ensure the trees get the coverage they need. Once you have flower buds showing it’s really important not to spray copper, as it’s very toxic to bees when it’s wet – though fine once it’s dried. And it’s also past the point of the copper being effective as the idea of the copper is to add a protectant layer over the buds, before they burst. And that’s it for the year. Now, you just have to go back to the beginning of the process and repeat all of the steps – except for applying copper fungicide. Because copper is a heavy metal it can build up in the soil. It’s also very toxic to bees when wet so should only be used when necessary. If in the past year your trees showed no signs of disease just skip the copper step the following year. What should I be doing to my lawn at this time of the year? (So that it’s stays healthy and green throughout Spring and Summer)

After the wet winter that we have had, lawns are looking rather sad. Yellow foliage, lots of moss, and the ground has compacted with the wet. Once the grass has started to grow and the first cut has been made, you can start the renovation of the lawn.

Answer:

First, it is important that the grass is not cut too low and that the clippings are removed. To improve the aeration of the ground it can be cored using a coring tool and the resulting holes filled with lawn mix, sand or potting mix. If extra seed is required to cover bare patches, you can add that in as well. A garden fork worked back and forward will do the job for areas not too compacted. Moss may be treated with iron sulphate or any of the liquid moss control products but it is important to follow the instructions on the label accurately. After the 2nd or 3rd cut, you can now apply lawn fertiliser. Intelligro have a great lawn fertiliser that will help to promote dense leaf growth – reducing space for weeds, it helps to develop the grass at the roots, and also has iron sulphate added to help control moss. Separate weed control may be done once the temperatures warm up later in September.

Take time to plant popular lettuce By Henri Ham SPRING IS officially here. It’s the busiest time of the year in the garden and one plant to get in now is lettuce. It’s not surprising lettuce is a popular plant to grow at this time of year. They grow well in these conditions and, in my opinion, there’s just something about the warmer weather that makes you want to enjoy salad. It’s funny now to think that back in the day we used to

harvest the whole lettuce when it was ready. Those were the days when iceberg was all the rage. But now, as most of us know, with many of the types of lettuce you can just pick off the leaves you need at the time and leave the plant growing. Probably the hardest part about growing lettuce is deciding which type to plant. That’s why I’m a big fan of growing a couple of several varieties. Once you’ve got your lettuce seedlings look for somewhere

well-drained and sheltered to plant them. If you don’t have much space, try growing them in pots or even hanging baskets. The great thing about growing them in containers is you can make them easily accessible to your kitchen. When you’ve found the right spot to plant, dig a little hole and plant each seedling around 20cm apart. Try not to overcrowd your seedlings to prevent fungal diseases. Watch out for slugs. DELICATE: Plant your seedlings in a well-drained and sheltered part of the garden.

SALAD: Pick off a leaf or two and your lettuce plant will keep growing.

Diesel expertise in Rolleston Those who have driven down Jones Road recently, may have noticed another new business has opened there. Diesel Fix moved to its new and more spacious building in Jones Road in July, having previously been based in Springston. Owned by Phil Thompson and Kylie Eastwood, who moved to Rolleston over 10 years ago, Diesel Fix has been operating for nearly three years with the business growing substantially in that time. Phil is an automotive and diesel fuel injection engineer. He completed trade qualifications in each along with training courses over a number of years at the Bosch headquarters in Melbourne. Along with over 30 years experience in fuel injection, Phil knows just about everything there is to know in the field. After many years working for others, Phil decided it was time to go out on his own, initially running a curbing business. People were continuously asking him to carry out diesel repairs so he started purchasing specialised equipment then decided to set up Diesel Fix. Diesel Fix offers a wide range of services from fuel injection pump reconditioning to injector reconditioning, common

rail injectors, Efi injector servicing, compression testing and vehicle scanning. The business is equipped with the most recent diagnostic equipment and staff carry out other general automotive servicing as required. Phil also carries a large range of reconditioned injector pumps and injectors for exchange, and supplies new common rail injectors as well as other diesel parts. Supporting Phil is partner, Kylie who looks after the administrative work. The couple says moving the business to Jones Road has been great as it offers Diesel Fix a higher profile while also being a handy location for their customers who are based in the city and right across Selwyn including Rolleston. Customers can drop off or courier their pumps and other parts to Diesel Fix, which is open from 8am-5pm, Mondays to Fridays and Saturdays, 9am-1pm. Your guide to Show Homes & New Sections in the Selwyn District

The pros and cons of building sites When selecting a building site weigh up your lifestyle, family needs and aspirations before signing up for any section. Those purchasing early on in the development of a subdivision will have more choice of section size and orientation to the street and sun. As the individual sites are sold, there may be less availability though this need not be a deterrent. With good design any building site can be made to work. Selwyn has experienced considerable growth in recent years. Sub-divisions have opened up and been built on, with new developments regularly coming on stream. Within these, section sizes vary from around 400 square metres upwards to 5,000 square metres. Lifestyle blocks are also scattered around the district. The size of the house and amount of yard desired will influence the feasibility of some building sites as will sun and wind direction, bearing in mind that a house can be designed to capture the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free heat and allow for pleasant outdoor areas to enjoy. If the street side of the building site is north/north west, incorporating fenced or planted courtyards can offer private places to entertain and bask in the sun. Those wanting street presence or keen on gardening may prefer a corner section and while it might seem they offer less privacy, with strategic placement of fences quite the opposite can be the case. Weigh up your familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs in terms of the outdoor areas too. Do you want play

areas for your children? Do you have a need for off-street parking for a number of vehicles and space for a boat, caravan or motorhome, which may need to be parked out of site of the street? How much lawn or garden do you want? Start by identifying housing developments that you like and could see your family living in. Think also about the convenience of shops and other amenities, something that may or may not be a concern. Single out possible sections then talk with a designer or builder. Most building companies have a good selection of standard plans as a starting point and they will usually work with a client to modify a plan or draw up one that will work on a particular building site, whilst also containing the components the client is seeking within their new home. Before signing up for any building site, check the Council land zoning and recession plane requirements as well as covenants for the sub-division. These will show not only how far from a boundary the house can be sited but also roof height, permissible building materials, and acceptable types of fencing, as well as what can be on view from the street like a clothes line, caravan or motorhome. Conducting your research first will save any frustration or hassles later. All sections are workable, it is simply a matter of choosing one that matches your specific needs.

Getting what you paid for on settlement day In the movies, the day someone gets the keys to their newly bought home is portrayed as a golden, stress-free time. The reality can be rather different, especially if you find your dream home has turned into something akin to Nightmare On Elm Street since you agreed to buy it. “The trick to a stress-free settlement is to do as much as you can in advance, starting with when you’re signing the sale and purchase agreement,” advises Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive of the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). “The sale and purchase agreement is the legally-binding contract agreed between you and the seller that details the property, the conditions of sale and the price. Make sure that there is an agreed list of chattels, with notes as to their condition, in this agreement. If the property is full of rubbish, and you want it gone before you

take possession, make that a condition of the sale. If there are holes in the fence that the seller has promised to fix, get that in writing on the agreement: don’t rely on verbal assurances that something will be done prior to settlement. It’s far better to get all these niggly details sorted out before you sign the agreement than face protracted battles down the track.” As a buyer, you are generally entitled to one opportunity to inspect the property before settlement day. If the property has sitting tenants, ask your lawyer to ensure there is a ‘final inspection’ clause inserted in the sale and purchase agreement before you sign it. This inspection is to make sure that it is in the same or better order it was when you viewed it and agreed to the sale. It is not designed to give you the chance to uncover new defects, or to give a rental agent the chance to appraise the place’s value. “A seller does not have to accommodate any extra requests to visit the property prior to settlement,” Lampen-Smith says. “Remember that the seller may have a lot on their plate; making the property available so your interior decorator can measure up for new curtains is unlikely to be a high priority.” Your real estate agent will usually arrange the inspection with the seller, and accompany you to the property. Most

experts recommend that this inspection takes place around 24 hours before settlement day so there are no hold-ups to the transfer of funds and ownership. When you come to inspect the property, everything should be as it was when you decided to purchase it (as reflected by the sale and purchase agreement). LampenSmith says you can expect chattels to be in a reasonable working order unless it has been agreed and documented otherwise. You cannot complain to the seller that the oven isn’t clean enough, but you can raise a complaint if it is missing, or it is a different model to the one cited in the agreement. Don’t forget to check that garage door openers and pool covers are in situ, or that locks work properly. If there is a problem, the REAA says you should speak to the real estate agent and your lawyer in the first instance. They can help you negotiate with the seller to remedy any issues, such as a newly broken window or missing keys. Your lawyer should work with the seller’s lawyer to reach a satisfactory solution, such as

getting the seller to make any necessary repairs, or to deduct any costs from the eventual settlement. Making the final inspection 24 hours before settlement is due gives you and the seller time to reach an agreement over anything outstanding. This is important, because if you do not complete settlement on the due date and the seller can demonstrate that they were able and willing to complete their side of the settlement, then you will be liable for interest on any portion of the purchase price that is unpaid. The seller does not need to give you access to the property while any amount remains outstanding. “Like any property transaction, success often depends on doing things right at the start,” Lampen-Smith says. “Get the details right at the beginning and you’ve got a greater chance of a happy ending.” For independent advice on buying or selling property, check out www.reaa. govt.nz.
